Show Spotlight: Running on Empty

By Nick Piccinino

They met randomly in the fall — brought together by their love of music and college radio. Find out why Kayla Chumley, junior graphic design major, and Lily Bose, freshman biology major, bonded so well in our studio.

What was the reason behind the name Running on Empty?

Kayla: “We were trying to figure out a clever show name and I realized that I was exhausted at the end of the day on Thursdays.”

Lily: “Same. We’re just very tired people.”

Kayla: “I was actually watching an episode of Gilmore Girls. One of the characters said they were running on empty and I was like, ‘Yes!’”

How did you meet each other and get into WXJM?

Kayla: “I met Lily online.”

[laughter]

Lily: “I posted on the WXJM Facebook page that I wanted a co-host.”

Kayla: “I posted that I wanted to be trained, and I can't remember if Ian told me that you needed a co-host or if I was just scrolling and found you. It was one of those.”

What’s been your favorite part about WXJM so far?

Kayla: “Definitely the people. I feel like I’ve met some very wholesome humans here.”

Lily: “It’s nice to be surrounded by people who like the same things as you.”

Is there any new music that you’re enjoying right now?

Lily: “Lately, I’ve just been listening to Toro y Moi’s new album.”

Kayla: “I feel like I listen to a variety of things. It’s not new, but at the beginning of the year I was listening to a lot of Pinegrove and now I’m slowly fading back into that.”

Since you’re not doing a show together this semester, what are you going to miss most about being co-hosts?

Kayla: “Our chemistry.”

Lily: “It was just fun to spend time together.”
